I did this project with Jasmine Aranda on August 28th, 2014. The goal of this project was to get a gummy worm that was on top of a plastic cup inside of a gummy lifesaver, which was under the cup. However, there was a catch: it couldn't touch the surface, and we can pick up and move the objects with paper clips.
Procedure:
First, I picked up the worm with hooks made out of the paper clips. Then my partner knocked over the cup and picked up the lifesaver with her own paperclips hooks. We tried to fit the worm in, but I ended up dropping Fred. Then, we tried this strategy once more, except this time I tried slowly dropping it into the lifesaver. This process was successful.
Pre-Lab Questions:
Why is it important to follow an agreed-upon procedure?
It is important, because we all need to be on the same page to avoid confusion.
Why is it important to document your procedure and any errors or differences?
This is important so we will be able to tell what we did wrong and what we did right so we can know what to do if we repeat this procedure.
Why do we not not normally have food in chemistry class?
The reason we don't have food in the chemistry lab is because the various chemicals that have been inside, and possibly spilled, inside of the chemistry class room and make our food inedible.
Conclusion:
It is possible to save a gummy worm's life without touching it with your hands.
