art Of functions
The piece I chose to recreate on the graphing calculator app Desmos was the classic painting The Scream, by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. I specifically chose to recreate the lithograph version Munch created in 1895. I created this piece by first inserting the classic image into Desmos and then creating various functions that mimicked the shape of the central figure and the background of the image. A function is simply a relationship involving one or more variables that can be manipulated to create various objects when graphed. In my image, I used the linear, quadratic, cubic, square root, cube root, exponential, absolute value, rational, and trigonometric functions. The functions I created the most in my “math”terpiece were linear, which can mostly be seen in the railing behind the central figure, trigonometric, which can be seen in the ominous, unexplainable background, and quadratic functions, which I used to mostly create the central figure.
(Note: Some of the shading looks unfinished because Desmos was unable to properly render such large amount of complex functions.)
