Building A better Britain
Over the course of the last several years, our country has progressed immensely. There are many more jobs. More people are moving to the city. Machinery is making work easier and more efficient. However, despite these major advancements in productivity, this revolution has had a poor effect on many individuals, particularly those of the lower class. This may just be a necessary effect on Britain’s rise to greatness, but it’s still unacceptable.
The new inventions ushered in by this “Industrial Revolution” are perhaps our greatest accomplishments of the past century. For example, the new machines used in the factories make production much more cost-effective and have increased productivity. It also makes work much more safe for the employees. New jobs created by these machines have caused many more people to move to the city, helping society move on from the harsh and difficult ways of the old and into the advancing, yet still hard, new. Job opportunities have also increased with the rise of industrialization, allowing many individuals to find work. For example, single women can now strive to become more than lowly housemaids.
Despite the new machines, many of the most popular jobs are very dangerous. The recurring accidents in the workplace have taken the lives of many men, women, and children. Many womens’ skirts are being caught in factory machinery, causing serious deformities or injuries. The fact that children of the lower classes have to work such long hours with so little pay is atrocious. They shouldn't have to work at all. They should be in their school houses writing their alphabets. However, due to the high cost of even the cheapest homes, all members of the family have to work each day, just so they can afford to live in their poorly built homes. Also, with more people moving to the urban areas, there have been more diseases that are spreading throughout the cities. There has been much sacrifice for the progress of man.
The first step in improving these deep flaws within our society is to make work safer for the employees. If we do not, they may begin rebelling against the large corporations. Who will we then have to make our textiles? We must all remember that to keep Britain in this glorious states, we need to keep on attracting new workers. If we want new workers, then we must make our cities more attractive. We must stop building crude and dangerous homes, and we need a sewage system to improve the sanitation. Britain must also stop child labor. No matter how it will affect the marketplace, it is ethically inexcusable to have the future generation working in such dangerous conditions and many members of society will stand for it no longer. In general, we need to improve if we want this revolution to live on.
It is now apparent that despite the vast improvements in industry, there have also been serious gaps in the progress that has resulted from this revolution. If we want to continue to advance as a society, we need to solve these problems and close these gaps. Otherwise, we will end up falling, like the great empires of Rome, Egypt, and Greece. The technologies and the effect they’ve had have made Britain great. We have all seen, or possibly experienced, the country’s troubles out on the streets. Now, let’s improve upon this country’s flaws to truly make it magnificent.
